BELGIAN ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY V.V.S. - Working Group Variable Stars Cataclysmic Variables Circular No.18 1994, October 08 Ed.: T. Confirmation has come from Gary Poyner, Birmingham, UK and from other observers. 1994 Oct 07.076 UT, [13.9 (P. Schmeer, 0.20-m SCT, seq AAVSO); Oct 07.966 UT, 11.4 (P. Schmeer); Oct 07.976 UT, 11.3 (P. Schmeer); Oct 07.979 UT, 11.3 (G. Poyner, 0.40-m refl); Oct 07.999 UT, 11.3 (T. Vanmunster); Oct 08.037 UT, 11.2 (E. Broens, 0.35-m refl, seq AAVSO); Oct 08.064 UT, 11.4 (P. Schmeer); Oct 08.096 UT, 11.4 (P. Schmeer); Oct 08.145 UT, 11.0 (J. Pietz, 0.20-m SCT, seq AAVSO); Oct 08.163 UT, 11.3 (T. Vanmunster); Oct 08.176 UT, 11.2 (P. Schmeer); The star was last recorded in outburst on 1993, October 24 (J. Pietz, Germany), when it reached mag 11.3. According to our records, 6 outbursts of BZ UMa have been observed between 1990 and 1994 (excluding the current one). In a recent paper [1], J.S. Jurcevic, R.K. Honeycutt a.o. suggest that BZ UMa is an SU UMa-type system, given the small mass ratio, long outburst recurrence time and short orbital period. Further observations during the current outburst could help in establishing the true nature of this interesting dwarf nova. [1] Jurcevic J. et al., 1994, PASP, 106, 481-485 V344 Lyr [UGSU, 14.5p - <20p] ============================= We have been informed by Eric Broens, Mol, Belgium of an outburst detection of this dwarf nova type cataclysmic variable. An independent detection has also been reported by Gary Poyner, Birmingham, UK and by Bill Worraker, Didcot, UK. Observations of the current outburst : 1994 Oct 03.863 UT, 14.6 (G. Poyner, 0.40-m refl, seq TA); Oct 03.918 UT, 14.7 (E. Broens, 0.35-m refl, seq TA); Oct 03.974 UT, 14.2 (B. Worraker, 0.26-m refl, seq TA); Oct 04.064 UT, 14.8: (T. Vanmunster, 0.35-m refl, seq TA); Oct 04.792 UT, 14.5 (T. Vanmunster); Oct 04.808 UT, 14.6 (G. Poyner); Oct 05.835 UT, 14.9 (T. Vanmunster); Oct 05.842 UT, 14.8 (E. Broens); The previous outburst of V344 Lyr was observed on Aug 1, 1994 (see CVC No.11). Given the fact that this dwarf nova has frequent outbursts and that its behaviour has been studied intensively both by amateurs and professional astronomers, we will discontinue reporting activity of it in future CVC's. IR Lyr [Unknown Type, 14.6p - 16.0p] ==================================== Following our statement in CVC No.17 on the atypical dwarf nova behaviour of this variable, Ron Downes [Space Telescope Science Institute, USA] emails : "... I'm presently writing a paper on CV spectroscopy, and one of the objects we have a spectrum of is the star that is marked in the Downes and Shara atlas as IR Lyr. The spectrum of this object is not a CV spectrum, and is thus consistent with the comment in CVC No.17. We would like to include a reference to your photometry of the star in arguing it is not a cataclysmic variable ... Remark that our observations do not exclude the possibility there is truly a cataclysmic variable in the IR Lyr field. It could still be that the object flagged in the original reference is incorrect." Recent observations of this intriguing object indicate it has started to brighten again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DATE (UT) MAGN MS SEQ OBSERVER REMARKS SOURCE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1994 09 01.914 [14.5 mv GSC Vanmunster, T. 35-cm refl.
